Certain words in
English are always grammatically singular, even though they might have plural
meanings. You should be very careful of subject verb agreement with the
following words:
1. anybody
2. everybody
3. nobody
4. somebody
5. each
6. anyone
8. no
one
9. someone
10.
every
11.
anything
12.
everything
13.
nothing
14.
something
These words can have a plural meaning, but they are
grammatically singular and they must have singular verbs.
Everybody are going* to
the theater.
Even though we understand from this example that a
lot of people are going to the theater, everybody is singular and requires a
singular verb. The plural verb are going
should be changed to the singular verb is
going.
