Skill 16 Make Verbs Agree After Certain Words

Certain words in English are always grammatically singular, even though they might have plural meanings. You should be very careful of subject verb agreement with the following words:

1.     anybody

2.     everybody

3.     nobody

4.     somebody

5.     each

6.     anyone

7.     everyone

8.     no one

9.     someone

10.    every

11.    anything

12.    everything

13.    nothing

14.    something

These words can have a plural meaning, but they are grammatically singular and they must have singular verbs.

Everybody are going* to the theater.

Even though we understand from this example that a lot of people are going to the theater, everybody is singular and requires a singular verb. The plural verb are going should be changed to the singular verb is going.
