- First look at each of the four underlined words or group of words. You want to see if you can spot which of the four answer choices is not correct.
- If you have been unable to find the error by looking only at the four underlined expressions, then read the complete sentence. Some underlined expressions are incorrect because of something in another part of the sentence.
- Never leave any answers blank. Be sure to answer each question even if you are unsure of the correct response.
Introduction to the Written
Expression Questions
Questions
16 through 40 test your knowledge of the correct way to express yourself in
English writing. Each question in this section consists of one sentence in
which four words or groups of words have been underlined. You must choose the
letter of the word or group of words that is not correct.
Example
1
The final
delivery of the day is the importantest.
A B C D
If
you look at the underlined words in this example, you should notice immediately
that importantest is not correct. The
correct superlative form of important is the
most important. Therefore, you should choose answer (D) because (D) is not
correct.
Example 2
The books that
I read was interesting.
A B
C D
If
you look at the underlined words in this example, each word by itself appears
to be correct. However, the singular verb was
incorrect because it does not agree with the plural subject books. Therefore, you should choose
answer (C) because (C) is not correct.
The
following skills will help to prepare you for the structure and written
expression section of the TOEFL. The structure and written expression skills
have been included together because many grammatical points are tested in both
the structure section and the written expression section of the TOEFL.
Skills
1-13 generally help to prepare for the structure section of the TOEFL, and
skills 14-48 generally help to prepare for the written expression section.
However, certain points within skills 1-13 can also be tested in the structure
section. The TOEFL exercises at the end of each skill reflect the emphasis that
is given to this skill in each part of the structure and written expression
section of the TOEFL. For example, if the TOEFL exercise at the end of a
particular skill contains eight structure questions and two written expression
questions, this means that this particular skill is tested mostly in the
structure section of the test but it may occasionally be tested in the written
expression section.
